Are you in Google's answer, or just in its results?

Google Search, Maps & AI Overviews — measured as their own surface

Google added an AI-written answer, the AI Overview, above its results for a growing share of searches. It reads the sources it trusts and names a handful of businesses before anyone scrolls to the familiar blue links. Awal measures all three Google surfaces in the same pass: the AI Overview, your organic ranking, and your Maps listing.

01

The AI Overview: Google answers before anyone scrolls

When a buyer searches "best dental clinic in Doha", Google increasingly writes the answer itself: a short summary naming two or three businesses, with the sources it pulled from cited alongside. That answer sits above every traditional result, and plenty of buyers never read past it. Awal captures the AI Overview whenever your buyer questions trigger one, and records three things: whether it appeared, whether it named you, and which sources it cited to build the answer. Those citations matter as much as the mention, because they tell you exactly which pages to strengthen if you want into the answer.

02

Search and Maps: the surfaces feeding it

The same scan reads your classic organic ranking (verified against your own domain, never guessed from a name match) and your Maps listing: position in the local pack, star rating, and review count. These aren't separate errands. The AI Overview and Gemini both retrieve from Google's index, so your Search and Maps standing directly shapes what Google's AI says. Fixing one moves the other.

03

How Awal measures it

Awal runs your real buyer questions through a live Google results feed and stores the full receipt for each one: organic positions, the local pack with ratings, and the AI Overview text with its cited sources when one appears. Google results are position-based, so we report them as positions (ranked #3, Maps listing #2, named in the AI Overview) and keep them separate from the chat engines' mention rates. The two measure different things, and averaging them together would flatter nobody honestly.

04

The honest caveat

AI Overviews don't appear on every search; Google decides query by query, and a scan can only capture one where it shows. Results also vary by location and time, so a scan is a dated snapshot of what Google served, not a permanent ranking. And a strong Maps listing doesn't guarantee the AI Overview names you: the Overview leans on the sources it cites, which is exactly why the receipt lists them.
